Saint Peter’s Square is one of the masterpieces of Bernini, and he had quite a challenge making the square. A requirement was that it should have space for 100,000 persons and that everyone should be able to see the Pope from where they were standing. On one side of the square the St. Peters Basilica is located, on the other side the road leading to the square. On the two other sides two colonnades are located representing the arms of the church protecting the people.
At the square a large obelisk can be seen. This was brought to Rome by Emperor Nero during his reign. Two beautiful fountains can also be seen at the square, and these fountains receive its water from an old aqueduct.
