Traveling with train from Rome to Bologna

Have you already gotten your plane ticket to Rome in order, but you are looking for more places to visit outside Rome? How much time will it take? What is the price of the different train tickets?

If you want to travel from Rome to Bologna with train, there are a couple of things worth knowing. The main train station in Rome is the Termini station, and you should plan on leaving Rome from this station to make things as efficient as possible. As you arrive to Bologna, make sure to arrive to Bologna Centrale, a central station in Bologna from which you can easily invade the city!

The normal travel time between the two cities are around 2 hours if you use the fast trains. That isn’t very much, making it easy to do a day trip to Bologna from Roma, and return back in the evening.

How much does the train ticket cost between Rome and Bologna?

It is quite amazing that the train time is only two hours, considering that it covers a distance of almost 400km. So, if you would do the same distance by car, it would take much more time. And that is also why the tickets can be quite expensive, at least if you buy only a few days before the actual travel.

For example, if I would buy a train ticket that connects Rome with Bologna right now, the price would be 60 Euro (for a ticket in one of the upcoming days). But, if I plan ahead and buy the ticket a couple of weeks in advance or more, I can easily find tickets costing only 30 Euro or less. So, if you can, prepare your travel and buy your tickets early.

How to get from the railway station in Bologna to the city center?

The distance between the railway station in Bologna and the main square in the city (Piazza Maggiore) is 1,5km. This can be done in an easy way on foot and shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes. But, if you start visiting stores along the way like Zara, you will for sure spend more time before you end up at the main square on Bologna.

What is the distance between Fiumicino Airport and the Ciampino Airport?

Rome has two busy international airports, the Fiumicino Airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci), and the Ciampino Airport. Are they far away from one another?

The quickest road by car connecting the airports is the combination of the A91 and the E80 highways. The distance is around 24km. If the traffic is average, this trip should be made in 25-30 minutes.

Fiumicino to Ciampino

If you compare the distance with a journey from any of the airports to the city center, then Fiumicino is around 30km from the city center of Rome, while Ciampino AIrport is less than 20km from the city center of Rome. Fiumicino is the more expensive airport, while Ciampino is regularly used by the low-cost airlines.

How to travel between Fiumicino and Ciampino?

If you want to travel from Ciampino to Fiumicino

If you want to travel from Fiumicino to Ciampino

  • Use a train or a bus to get from Fiumicino to Termini.
  • Travel from Termini to Ciampino using a direct bus to the airport.

These methods might seem simple, but you will most likely use at least two hours from one airport to the other. That is quite a lot, at least if you compare it to the 30 minute right with a taxi between the two airports.

Can I do a day trip from Rome to Florence?

I would really love to discover Florence during my stay in Rome. Is it far away from Rome? How much times does it take to driver between the cities or maybe using railway?

Rome is a beautiful city, and that is why you should have at least 4-5 days in Rome. But, if you have even more time, then Firenze is also a beauty and we can totally understand why you would want to visit Florence (Firenze) as well.

The fastest driving road between Rome and Florence is around 275km, but driving the distance should take you around 3 hours. That is a bit much. But, there is a much faster way to travel between Rome and Florence, and that is using the Italian railway system.

There are normally several trains leaving from Rome Termini to Florence every single hour, and the price for such a train can be around 20 Euro. There are of course more expensive tickets available as well, but you can get these travels at quite low fares. And the terrific is that even though it will take you about 3 hours to get from Rome to Florence by car, the train ride only lasts for 90 minutes. You can, therefore, save a lot of time traveling this way, and it is way more convenient.

As your train arrives at Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station in Firenze you are already in the city center and can easily just leave the station to discover the attractions and sights at once.
